BOOK OF ABSTRACTS

Abstracts (max. 300 words) are invited for papers on topics relevant to the fields of meaning, context & cognition with the goal of the conference to integrate and promote both theoretical and applied research from the interface of semantics and pragmatics.

 

During the 2011 meeting we would like to focus on the following areas:

  • CONTEXT – definitions, the semantics-pragmatics interface, the explicit-implicit distinction, context typologies
  • SPEECH ACTS AND SPEECH ACTION – speech act theory-oriented research, interactional approaches, politeness, non-sentential speech acts
  • FORMULAIC DISCOURSE - formulaic language in use, rituals, magic, inter-cultural encounters
  • LANGUAGE AND EMOTION – emotion and linguistic performance, humour, intercultural perspectives, politeness and emotion
  • LINGUISTIC INTERFACES – meeting grounds for linguistics and other disciplines, e.g. sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, political studies, media studies, emancipatory pragmatics and anthropological linguistics, cognitive studies, intersection of philosophy of language and linguistics, interdisciplinarity – merits & conflicts
  • INTERCULTURAL PERSPECTIVES ON DISCOURSE SEMANTICS – contrastive studies, media discourse, global communication, bilingual and multilingual contexts, intercultural clashes and misunderstandings, translation-related issues
  • APPLICATIONS – corpus studies, LSP, experimental studies, comparative & contrastive studies, enhancing development and teachability of linguistic-pragmatic skills in bilingual and multilingual contexts

    ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

    Please email your proposal to: MCC@uni.lodz.pl with a copy to Iwona Witczak-Plisiecka (iw.plisiecka@gmail.com)

    Abstracts should not be longer than 300 words. Please include your name, affiliation and e-mail address. Abstracts will be double-blind peer-reviewed and should include sufficient details to allow reviewers to judge the scientific merits of the work. Paper presentations will be allowed 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for discussion. Presentations will be in English; organizers also envisage a possibility of a session in Polish.

    Please contact the organizers if you want to present in Polish.

    Participants without a paper are asked to e-mail their affiliation details.

     

    PAPERS AND POST-CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS

    A volume of peer-reviewed selected papers will be published with an international publisher, a selection of papers can also be published in Research in Language, an abstracted international linguistics journal published by Lodz University Press (paper edition) and Versita MetaPress (e-version).

    The accommodation offered by the organizers is Lodz University Conference Centre, which is also the conference venue.  It is located within the walking distance from the city centre. All rooms are equipped with a private bathroom, refrigerator, TV and free internet access (ethernet).

    The conference package advertised above includes accommodation (2 nights:  24/25 & 25/26 March), meals (24: supper, 25: breakfast, lunch, 26: breakfast, lunch) and conference dinner on 25th March.

    Individual meals can also be bought on site.

    Conference dinner price is € 50 and can be paid on site.

    Extended stays at the Lodz Conference Centre and booking accommodation for persons accompanying the participants are also possible and are both arranged by the organizers. Please contact us at MCC@uni.lodz.pl for more details.
