Legal Terminology: Research and Practice LawTerm 2010

1^st International Workshop on Legal Terminology hosted by the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics, University of Łódź

28-30 May 2010

This workshop aims is to provide an opportunity for scholars to share their ideas and experience of adopting different methodological and theoretical perspectives on studying legal terminology. We invite papers and work-in-progress reports related to the following issues (the list is not exhaustive):

Term phraseology; word combinatorics, formulaicity in legal texts;
Resources for terminology work; corpora; computational and analytical tools;
Legal terminography;
Socio-cognitive approaches to legal terminology;
Cross-language and cross-cultural studies;
Indeterminacy in legal terminology; vagueness in legal concepts;
Ontologies, knowledge structures and knowledge management;
Terminology and its applications for translation;
Perception and comprehension of legal terminology by the general public
Teaching legal terminology to various audiences (translation students, law students and professionals);

Łódź between the past and the present, a stroll through Księży Młyn and around Manufaktura

Łódź, a short name with a long history

A short summary:

1.Łódź received municipal rights from King Władysław Jagiełło (Jogaila) on 29^th July 1423

2.For over 400 years Łódź remained a small rural township

3.The 'Golden Age' of Łódź, popularly known as the Polish Manchester or Promised Land ( 1850-1890) is known for the creation of a unique constellation of textile factories, workers' housing estates and industrialists' palaces surrounded by gardens.

We will visit Karol Scheibler's Empire at Księży Młyn, the Priest's Mill, then we will stroll around Izrael Kalmanowicz Poznański's Manufaktura at Ogrodowa Street.

Conference Venue/Hotel and Transportation

The conference will be held at the recently modernized Centrum Szkoleniowo Konferencyjne Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (Conference Center of the University of Łódź, ul. Kopcińskiego 16/18, 90-232 Łódź, Poland, which offers all the conference presentation amenities, including laptops, powerpoint beamers and overhead projectors (but no photocopying facilities). The Conference Center is located ca. 2 kilometers from the downtown area, which is famous for its variety of restaurants, pubs and vibrant nightlife.

The rooms in the hotel section of the Conference Center come with complimentary breakfast, private bathroom, satellite TV, radio, telephone, refrigerator and free internet access (via ethernet cable). The Center also houses a restaurant and a drink bar.

Getting to Łódź

Lodz Airport (http://www.airport.lodz.pl) operates only a small number of flights. Most visitors fly into Warsaw Chopin Airport (http://www.lotnisko-chopina.pl/?lang=en) and then take a train to Łódź (approximately 1,5 hours). The recommendable transfer option between the airport and the Warsaw Central Railway Station is a taxi, which costs ca. 12 euros and the ride takes about 20 minutes. There are 12-15 trains between Warsaw and Łódź daily, most of which arrive at the Łódź Fabryczna Station which is 5 minutes away (by taxi, cost ca. 4 euros) from the conference venue.
