Third International Conference on Philosophy of Language and Linguistics (PhiLang2013) University of Lodz (Poland), 9-11 May 2013 

 

Second Circular and Call for Papers 

 

The Department of English and General Linguistics at University of Lodz announces the Third International Conference on Philosophy of Language and Linguistics (PhiLang2013). 

 

The principal aim of our Conference is to bring together philosophers, logicians and linguists; we would like the papers to address the following issues (the list is not exhaustive): 

 

• Philosophy of language and linguistics: mutual inspirations 

• Philosophy of language, linguistics and literary theory 

• Philosophical background of semantics and pragmatics 

• Polish contribution to the development of the philosophy of language

• Formal approaches to philosophy of language and linguistics

 

We also plan a special session on Philosophy of Language: The Legacy of Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein. 

 

The following scholars have accepted our invitation to address the conference as plenary speakers:

Semantics and context-sensitivity 

 

John Collins (University of East Anglia) 

What is a variable such that a (natural) language may realise one? 

 

Chris Fox (University of Essex) 

The meaning of formal semantics 

 

Kasia Jaszczolt and Chi-Hé Elder (University of Cambridge) 

Conditional utterances, conditional thoughts, and the limits of contextualism

 

Gary Kemp (University of Glasgow) 

Quine and Wittgenstein as regards linguistics as a science 

 

Paul Livingston (University of New Mexico) 

The sense of finitude and the finitude of sense 

 

Mieszko Tałasiewicz (University of Warsaw) 

Categorial grammar and the foundations of the philosophy of language 

 

Abstracts of papers, in MS Word format, of max. 300 words (followed by 5-7 key terms), should be forwarded by e-mail to: philang2013@uni.lodz.pl 

 

Deadline for submission is 31 December 2012. Presentations should last maximum 30 minutes (including discussion and questions). Notification of acceptance will be sent by 1 March 2013

 

A volume of selected conference proceedings will be published with an international publisher;  we also plan a special volume on The Legacy of Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein. 

 

The conference fee is 175 EUR (125 for doctoral students); 350 PLN (175 for doctoral students) for participants from Poland. It covers the cost of participation, conference materials and conference dinner. 

 

Accommodation will be provided at the University Conference Center, Lodz, Kopcinskiego 16/18 (www.csk.uni.lodz.pl). Single and double rooms are available. The cost of a single room per night is 140 PLN, double 210 PLN, breakfast is included in the price.
