Welcome to the Chair of Pragmatics

at the Faculty of Philology, University of Łódź, Poland

The Chair of Pragmatics (est. 2008, head: prof. Piotr Cap) is committed to scholarly and didactic activities reflecting the perception of pragmatics as a functional, i.e. cognitive, social and cultural, perspective on language and communication. We offer B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. level courses on various aspects of pragmatics, from formal/philosophical to sociolinguistic, anthropological and culture-oriented. We organize three international conference series, "New Developments in Linguistic Pragmatics", "Linguistic Approaches to Funniness, Amusement and Laughter" and "Political Linguistics" (jointly with the University of Warsaw), and host several other international meetings, e.g. the 2010 congress of the CADAAD project. Our members participate in the EU research and educational programs, including Socrates-Minerva and COST. We publish the internationally abstracted scientific journal Lodz Papers in Pragmatics (LPP), available in both print and online versions. In 2009, Piotr Cap launched the International Review of Pragmatics, published by Brill (Leiden/Boston). For more information on our activities please visit the website sections.
